Reimagining Migrant Worker
Recreation Centres
2025
UX Design Research Project for Soon Lee Recreation Hub & Kaki Bukit Recreation Centre
Project Overview
Migrant Worker Recreation Centres (RCs) were established to provide social, recreational, and community spaces for migrant workers. With the planned redevelopment of the Soon Lee and Kaki Bukit Recreation Centres in 2027, this project aimed to establish a strategic design foundation for future RC experiences through a human-centred design research approach.
Key ChallengesHow might we reimagine Recreation Centres as vibrant destinations of choice for migrant workers—creating experiences that support their diverse cultural, social, and recreational needs while fostering a sense of belonging and well-being?
Research GoalUsing Design Thinking and qualitative research methods, we examined the migrant worker ecosystem from multiple perspectives. By understanding users as people first, the research explored both their practical and emotional needs, informing future opportunities in spatial design, services, and programming. We conducted 5 Site Observation Sessions, 9 Stakeholder Focus Groups, 4 Shadowing Sessions and 10 Cultural Probe Studies.
Key OutcomeFinally, we identified opportunities to enhance the appeal of future RCs by creating more culturally relevant, socially engaging, and recreationally meaningful experiences. Insights from this phase informed strategic recommendations for the redevelopment of both recreation centres.
