A Vertical Future for Singapore

As climate change accelerates, rising sea levels have drastically reshaped Singapore’s geography, leaving only its highest elevations above water. By 2099, unexpected and accelerating ice sheet melts from Greenland and Antarctica have caused sea levels to rise by 4–5 meters, far surpassing earlier projections. Underestimated factors such as underwater melting and ice cliff collapse have led to rapid ice loss, triggering irreversible changes to our planet’s coastal cities. In this future, large portions of Marina Bay, East Coast, and Changi are submerged. Singapore, faced with extreme land scarcity, is forced to adopt radical climate adaptation measures.

The Concept

Everise imagines Singapore’s transformation into a hyper-dense vertical metropolis. The design takes inspiration from the octagonal shape of the Singapore $1 “Bagua” coin, which forms the foundation of the city. The octagon, a symbol of prosperity and protection, anchors the vertical rise of this imagined future.

Above this base, five monumental towers emerge — each representing a distinct region of Singapore: Central, West, North, East, and North-East. Interconnected by a vast network of skybridges, these towers form a self-sufficient ecosystem where housing, work, leisure, and mobility are seamlessly integrated despite the city’s constrained footprint.
In Everise, traditional family homes give way to community-oriented living. Residents no longer live in isolated nuclear units, but instead in interest-based clusters, where collective identity and shared resources redefine urban intimacy. Amid the density, people continue to gather in hawker centers, community gardens, and public spaces—preserving echoes of Singapore’s communal past. This vertical lifestyle also gives rise to new subcultures: some communities preserve nostalgic traditions from the “old world,” while others embrace post-individualist modes of living centered on resource-sharing, collaboration, and inclusivity. In doing so, Everise reflects not only an architectural response to the climate crisis, but also a social reimagining of how we live together.

Production Process

To bring Everise to life, we used Unreal Engine as the primary software for world-building and visualization. The environment was then integrated into a Virtual Production (VP) workflow at Aux Media Group, where we were able to simulate cinematic camera movements inside our digital world, capturing realistic perspectives of the vertical city. This process allowed us to explore not only the creative aspects of content creation but also the backend hardware setup, live integration, and cinematic storytelling enabled by VP technology. Through this, the project demonstrates how design, technology, and imagination converge to reimagine Singapore’s future.

Everise is not only a vision of how Singapore might adapt to extreme climate change, but also a reflection on how culture, community, and co-living might evolve under conditions of scarcity and density. Through design and Virtual Production, we invite audiences to step into this speculative future — to question, imagine, and reframe what it means to live together in a world reshaped by rising seas.
