This interactive data-driven installation presents a multi-sensory exploration of Deception Island, a remote and enigmatic volcanic island in the Antarctic. The work comprises seven interconnected sketches, six of which visualize critical environmental and anthropogenic data spanning from 1900 to 2018.

Each sketch focuses on a specific dataset: seismic activity, gaseous emissions, volcanic hotspots, whaling kills, marine blood concentration, and whale species distribution in the surrounding waters. These temporal visualizations are accompanied by bespoke audio compositions that evolve in tandem with the data, offering an immersive auditory and visual narrative of ecological change. User interaction is facilitated through a set of six MIDI dials, each mapped to a unique data visualization. Turning a dial adjusts the temporal parameter of its respective sketch, enabling viewers to witness the transformation of environmental and biological conditions over time. This hands-on control reinforces the viewer’s role as both observer and participant in the unfolding narrative. At the core of the installation is a central sketch featuring a manipulable 3D model of Deception Island. This model responds to hand positioning, allowing users to rotate and inspect the island’s topography in real time.

Together, these elements form a cohesive investigation into the complex interplay of natural phenomena and human impact, framed through a lens of motion, data, and environmental inquiry. Without clear instructions, the interaction invites users to discover, through experimentation, how their choices unknowingly contribute to destruction. The piece serves as a metaphor for humanity’s often-blind impact on fragile ecosystems, blurring the line between control and chaos.
